Thundercat in Edinburgh
Thundercat played Usher Hall on April 1st, ahead of the release of his new album “Distracted”. This was my third time seeing Thundercat and it never gets boring, always keeping his setlist and stage design different.
Wasting no time Thundercat jumped right into the set, without even stopping as if all songs merged into one. He played a lot of old material including one of my favourites “Black Qualls”, from his album “It Is What It Is”. It was a well curated set mixing previous projects with upcoming releases. Even playing 5 upcoming songs from “Distracted” in a row. Before returning to familiar favourites.
“Dragonball Durag” got the crowd more alive. Thundercat telling the Edinburgh crowd to use this song to warm their vocal ahead of these next few. It wasn’t long before the crowd started going out of control. “Funny Thing” broughtMosh pits, crowd surfing and backflips took over and was the highlight of the night. Thundercat had to restart to experience it all again.
“Them Changes” seemed to be the last song of the night before a possible encore but already running 10 mins over set time it was seeming unlikely. In true Scottish fashion the crowd weren’t letting him leave without one more, Playing two more unreleased songs from “Distracted” and running 20 mins over set time. This was one of the best concerts I’ve seen.
